Skotlanti-tappio päätti Suomen squashmiesten kisat – miten hissiliike divisioonien välillä katkaistaan?

Suomen ja Skotlannin miehet pelasivat perjantain iltaottelussa Skotlantia vastaan enää kunniasta: molempien joukkueiden putoaminen EM-kisojen 2. divisioonaan oli selvää aiempien tulosten perusteella. Suomelle ylemmällä tasolla säilymisen haaste oli realistisesti ajatellen tiedossa, mutta viime kisojen pronssimitalisti Skotlannille tulos on iso pettymys.

Skotit pesivät kasvojaan voittamalla Suomen suoraan 4-0. Alasdair Prott päihitti Samuli Niskalan 3-0 selvähköin luvuin (11-6, 11-7 ja 11-2).. Greg Lobbanin ja Miko Äijäsen (kuvassa) välillä käytiin sen sijaan oli tasaväkinen kamppailu, jossa Lobban voitti kaksi ensimmäistä erää kahden pisteen erolla (12-10 ja 11-9). Äijänen vei kolmannen erän (11-8), mutta joutui neljännessä taipumaan 9-11. Kolmannessa, ”aikamiespelaajien” ottelussa Matias Tuomi hävisi Alan Clynelle kolmessa erässä (6-11, 5-11 ja 8-11).


Viimeinen ottelu Douglas Kempsellin ja Kristian Rautiaisen välillä tarjosi vauhtia ja videoitavia tilanteita. Ensimmäinen erä oli Rautiasielle kivinen (4-11), mutta toisessa meno oli aivan toisenlaista ja vaiherikas erä päättyi suomalaiselle hyväksi 11-9. Skottivoimanpesä Kempsell kuitenkin kokosi itsensä ja paukutti seuraavista kahdesta erästä 11-5-voitot.

Suomen kolmospelaaja Rautiainen oli tappiosta huolimatta pelin jälkeen verraten hyvällä tuulella. Kokonaistilanne oli tiedossa, joten paineita ei ollut, ja pelaaminen oli omalla tavallaan hauskaa.

”Yritin tehdä pelistä viihdyttävän, kun pääsimme pelaamaan kotiyleisön eteen Triplan lasikentälle. Toisessa erässä sain pidettyä pallonkin tarkkana”, hän heitti.

Myös Suomen miesten valmentaja Mahesh Mangaonkar kiitteli Rautiaista joukkueen kovimmaksi taistelijaksi. Syvempi analyysi siitä, mitä kisoista jäi käteen ja miten hissiliike 1. ja 2. divisioonan välillä voidaan katkaista, on luvassa huomenna.
