Suomen miesten joukkue päätyi ensimmäisen kisapäivän päätteeksi 2-2-tasapeliin Unkaria vastaan. Nuorista, pääosin Yhdysvalloissa harjoittelevista pelaajista koostuva joukkue oli vastuksena tietynlainen musta hevonen.

Unkarissa ei ole squashperinteitä, lajikulttuuri on nuorta eivätkä maan edustajat ole juuri kiertäneet kansainvälisiä turnauksia.

Ottelut kuitenkin näyttivät, että unkarilaiset ovat tosissaan ja tehneet myös oikeita asioita. Tosissaan olo näkyi myös siinä, että pelaajat kävivät kautta linjan melko lämpöisinä ja kommentoivat äänekkäästi sekä tuomaritoimintaa että omia suorituksiaan.

Suomalaisista todellista taistelusquashia esitti 44-vuotias Olli Tuominen, joka survoi niukasti häviämänsä avauserän jälkeen vakuuttavan 3-1-voiton Bendegúz Kamocsaista. Viimeisessä erässä Tuominen ei antanut vastustajalle pistettäkään.

Myös Kristian Rautiainen (kuvassa) pääsi voiton makuun, vaikka hänen pelaamattomuutensa näkyi otteiden heilahteluna avauserässä. Suomalainen kuitenkin kokosi itsensä hienosti ja kukisti peräti 196-senttisen, ulottuvan ja pelityyliltään yllätyksellisen Lénárd Püskin 3-1.
