Squashin joukkueiden EM-kisat pelattiin edelliskerran vuonna 2019. Seuraavana vuonna Suomen piti järjestää kisat ja vain kahta kuukautta aiemmin tuli korona ja kisat peruttiin. Tai siirrettiin vuodella eteenpäin – ja vuoden kuluttua siirrettiin uudelleen koronarajoitusten vuoksi. Kolmas kerta toden sanoi – nyt pelattiin.
Edelliskisojen miesten finaalissa pelasivat Englanti ja Espanja, nyt Englanti ja Ranska. Ensimmäinen ottelupari oli joukkueen kakkospelaajat, Patrick Rooney (ENG) ja Gregoire Marche. Englantilainen voitti erittäin korkealaatuisen ottelun lopulta 3-1.
Seuraavaksi Kauppakeskus Triplaan pystytettyyn kokolasiselle squashkentälle astuivat maiden ykköspelaajat Mohamed Elshorbagy ja Victor Crouin (FRA). Englantilaisen ammattilaisranking on peräti 2 ja myös ranskalainen on TOP10:n joukossa sijalla 8.
Ranskalainen voitti tasaisen ensimmäisen erän 12-10 ja englantilainen puolestaan toisen samoin luvuin. Kolmas taas ranskalaiselle ja neljäs erä uskomattoman nousun jälkeen Elshorbagille 11-7.
Ja viides erä ehkä vieläkin komeamman nousun kautta. Ranskalainen johti jo 6-1 ja sitten alkoi Mohamed- show’n toinen näytös. Hän nousi piste pisteeltä tilanteeseen 7-7, sitten 8-8, 9-9 ja 10-10. Loppujenlopuksi ottelu päättyi Elshorbagille 14-12 ja koko ottelu 3-2.
”En välitä siitä, mikä erän tilanne on. Pelaan pallo pallolta ja yritän löytää lyönnin, jolla voitan pallon. Tällaiset pelit tekevät minusta vahvemman”, Elshorbagy sanoi ottelun jälkeen.
Neljännessä ottelussa iskivät yhteen Englannin Nick Wall ja Auguste Dussourd. Taas mentiin pitkän kaavan kautta, ja pelattiin kaikki viisi erää. Wall johti erissä 2-1, mutta sitten Dussourd löysi uuden vaihteen ja vei kaksi seuraavaa erää 11-9.
